In this edition of Insight we pay tribute to two much-loved members of the Talking News team, hear about two different aspects of Chichester, go to hospital and to prison – but finish up with a festival.

Dorothy's Uncle
Earlier this year, two stalwarts of Chichester Area Talking News died. They were Dorothy Cornell and Pat Baxter. Both were former secretaries of the Talking News, long-serving readers on the fortnightly news programmes, contributors to Insight, and they helped with fundraising and social activities. As a tribute to their invaluable service to blind and visually handicapped people, we are repeating two readings they recorded for Insight. The first, by Dorothy, is an article she wrote about a colourful uncle who was the last in a long line of London characters.

Festival of Chichester - Geoff Farrell
Festival of Chichester – Geoff Farrell For nearly 40 years, the Chichester Festivities were a highlight of the early summer in this area with a varied programme of events but 2012 saw the demise of the organization, following difficulties caused by the recession and wet weather. However, a groundswell of public opinion and support from groups and individuals across the city saw a community arts event put on last year. Now, encouraged by that success, the 2014 Festival of Chichester will be bigger and better. Talking News wanted to be involved and one of our producers, Geoff Farrell, tells us about the show.

Life's Cricket Match by Gretta Steggles read by Pat Baxter
Life’s Cricket Match by Greta Steggles, read by Pat Baxter Cricket is the traditional summer sport in England and our final item is an archive recording which we are broadcasting again as a tribute to Talking News supporter Pat Baxter. She reads a prize-winning article written by one of our blind listeners, Greta Steggles, in the Age Concern literary competition in 2005. Greta called it Life’s Cricket Match and it was based on her love of cricket and her knowledge of the game. At the end of the story, you will have heard Greta say she is 91 and hoped to make nine more runs to reach her century. She just missed out- her wicket was finally taken in 2012 at the age of 98 – just two runs short.
